As the population of America ages, the number of the so-called sandwich
generation continues to grow. According to the Pew Institute, almost 50 percent
of adults in the United States who are in their 40s and 50s
and are raising children also have an elderly parent who is
65 years or older. Many of these middle-aged adults provide financial, physical
and emotional support for their aging parents.
Unfortunately, as their elderly parents age, many members of the
sandwich generation find that they can no longer provide for all of their
needs. So they must turn to outside help, such as Fulton County Family Services
or a nursing home.
Choosing to move an elderly parent to a nursing home can be
a difficult and emotional decision. But it is often in the best interest of the
elderly parent, especially if they require full-time care or considerable
medical attention.
What to Look for in a Nursing Home
Not all nursing homes are equal. So it's important that the elderly parent
and the adult child take the time to research various facilities and to also
get recommendations from friends, co-workers and family members before signing
a contract with a nursing home.
In addition, they should also look for the following highly desirable
features in a nursing home:
- A pleasant staff. If the staff members of the
nursing home appear overwhelmed and tired, it may be a sign that they
are overworked, which could lead to neglect of the residents.
- In-house medical services. If a facility provides
on-site services, residents won't have to be transported outside for
medical attention or diagnostic testing.
- A large variety of activities and programs. Nothing is
sadder than walking into a nursing home where the residents appear to have
nothing to do. A caring facility will offer numerous activities to keep
their residents physically and mentally engaged.
- Transportation options. Does the facility offer
transportation to various outside activities? An elderly
resident would probably enjoy being able to get out and
about every now and then.
- Excellent location. It's important that the facility is
located close to friends and family members who want to visit. A nursing
home that requires a long drive through heavy traffic will, sadly,
discourage guests.
